Why we sometimes don't invite GPs to interviews.
At Allocator One, we do things a bit differently from other limited partners. We focus on giving first-time GPs a real shot by providing not just anchor funding but also the support and infrastructure they need to succeed. However, we receive an enormous number of applications, so we still have to make tough choices. Sometimes, great applications get left behind simply because we can't support everyone.
How our selection process works
Our job at Allocator One is pretty simple. Twice a year, we try to get look at as many first-time GPs as we can. Then, we start interviewing the most promising applicants to fill up our next batch of Allocator One GPs.
Basically, we're drawing a metaphorical line in the sand somewhere, and every application that is above that line we want to have in our next batch. We then work with the selected GPs to make that happen. Our selection process is more like a competition where only a fixed number of applicants can succeed, regardless of the overall quality.
We have limits on the number of GPs we can reasonably support in a batch. We interview as many great GPs as needed to fill that capacity and then generally stop.
Why we don't provide specific feedback on application rejections
This is why we can’t respond to emails asking why a team was rejected. Often, there’s no specific answer. We could make one up, but that just doesn't feel honest.
The vast majority of applications we receive are authentic, inspiring and high quality.
The reason they didn't get invited isn't that we could pin-point something that was specifically wrong. Almost always, they were simply outshone by others, or other funds had closing timelines that were more compatible with our capabilities to deploy capital.
Especially for the top half of applicants who don’t get invited, the reason is often not within their application whatsoever, but rather lies in the exceptional quality of the very few applications that ended up above the cut-off.
